Gaylord S. McCluer, 82, veteran abstracter of titles and a life-long resident of Crawfordsville, died Saturday morning a Culver Hospital where he had been a patient since Sunday, September 21. Mr. McCluer had been in failing health for the past few weeks. He resided at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Sanford E. Nutt, 111 S. Grant Ave. Born January 8, 1870, Mr. McCluer was the son of Cicero McCluer and Mary Alice Sibbett McCluer, pioneer residents of Crawfordsville. His father was a native of Richland County, Ohio, and his mother was born in Pennsylvania. For many years his father was engaged as a brick manufacturer here. Gaylord McCluer's parents moved from Perry County, Illinois to Crawfordsville in 1870, the year of his birth. Mr. McCluer attended Wabash college as a youth and was graduated with the class of 1892. He joined in the observance of the 60th anniversary of his graduation last June at commencement. Mr. McCluer was a member of the Phi Gamma Delta Fraternity chapter at Wabash. During his college days he was prominent as a member of the college baseball team. Following his graduation from Wabash, Mr. McCluer became associated with the late Byron Russell in his abstract and building and loan office under the firm name of Russell and McCluer. Later he was for many years associated with the late Walter S. Coppage in the abstract of title business. He also served for a long period as secretary of the Oak Hill Cemetery Association, resigning the position not long ago upon his retirement from business activities. Prominent for many years as a member of the Crawfordsville lodge of Elks, Mr. McCluer has served as trustee of the lodge. He was an honorary member of the lodge at the time of his death. Mr. McCluer was also active in his membership in the Crawfordsville Country Club, serving for a number of years as a member of the Board of Directors. he also held membership in the First Methodist Church. Mr. McCluer was one of three children, Herman C. McCluer, his brother, who was a civil engineer and served some time as city engineer in Crawfordsville, and his sister, Alma, the wife of William S. Lamb, who resided in Oklahoma many years, both preceded him in death. Mr. Lamb was also a graduate of Wabash College with the class of 1884. Mrs. Lamb's husband died in 1914 and for many years Mr. McCluer and his sister resided together at their E. Jefferson St. home. She died September, 1945. Mr. McCluer never married. A nephew, Gaylord H. McCluer and a niece, Mrs. Frances Griffin reside in Bogata, Texas, while the other niece, the former Helen Lamb, and now the wife of David E. Lilienthal, resides in New York City. His sister-in-law, Mrs. Herman McCluer, who resides in Botata, Texas, also survives. Funeral arrangements were incomplete Saturday morning. he body is at the Bright Funeral Home where friends may call and where it will remain for the services. Burial will take place in Oak Hill Cemetery.
